The volunteer is matched with a person to support (Friend). This is a continuing relationship, which develops friendship trust and understanding.
The volunteer takes his / her Friend for a morning or afternoon outing each week.
The Friend decides where he / she would like to go.
It may be to coffee, or for a walk along the beach, or for a stroll in the park, or to a museum. The point of the outing is to give the Friend unhurried time to talk about whatever he / she would like to talk about.
Pleasant, relaxed manner and good listening skills.
Mental illness is not contagious.
Group 61 has a duty of care to ensure volunteers are not put at risk of violence, or of being manipulated or inconvenienced. We have never had a problem with violence and we have procedures that prevent that happening. The training course ensures volunteers are prepared to deal with any unusual situation that may arise.
People with mental health issues need to be understood and valued.
